An Aalim Moor sighting

We ventured out as a fan -- not a reporter -- to the Nor Cal Tip Off Classic at Newark Memorial High on Saturday and the last of the seven games featured Sheldon High (Sacramento) matched up against St. Mary's High (Berkeley). Call it the marquee matchup of the event.

That, of course, meant seeing Spartan signee Aalim Moor in action at the point for St. Mary's. He nailed a pair of treys, including a 24-footer at the buzzer to end the first half.

What stood out the most to us about Aalim was his defensive tenacity. He picked up his man in the backcourt and stayed with him all down the court -- there were no easy bring-up-the-ball possessions for his matchup.

Aalim finished with 13 points.

St. Mary's lost 71-65 primarily because of Darius Nelson, the younger brother of the Golden State Warriors DeMarcus Nelson. The younger Nelson is a load and a half in the paint and just a sophomore but checks in at 6-5 or so and seemingly 225 or more pounds.

Do catch St. Mary's High if you have the opportunity. Coach Manny Nodar has a collection of talents who go 100% all the time.
